audioEngine At the Oscars with True North’s “Inspiration Café”

A Docummercial with a Heart of Gold Directed by Helen Hunt

New York City — audioEngine’s Rex Recker made it to the Academy Awards this year with his deftly mixed commercial for True North’s “Inspiration Café.” Directed by actor Helen Hunt, the 60-second spot is lauded by Stuart Elliot in the New York Times as one of “three (blessedly new) commercials” airing during the awards this year. “Blessedly” is the operative word here and Recker added to the blessings with his astute handling of the audio, ensuring the dialogue, recorded live in a variety of locations, resulted in a naturally flowing and cohesive mandate delivered by Lisa Nigro, founder of the non-profit Inspiration Café.

Gear used by Recker for the spot includes Pro Tools and Sonic NoNOISE Plug-In. “The power of the NoNoise plug in enabled me to quickly and effectively eliminate much of the background noise on the dialogue tracks,” Recker adds.

Elliot writes the venerable Advertising column for the NY Times and coins Inspiration Café as the winner in the “Best Documentary Short Subject,” category, in a nod to its cinema verité feel.

The spot features Nigro, a former Chicago police officer, and winner of the True North consumer contest asking people to submit their True North stories -- passions in life that get people out of bed each day. Nigro found her True North in founding and operating Inspiration Cafe, a restaurant serving the homeless with dignity and respect. Helen Hunt directed the 60-second spot in a sincere and heartfelt way, bringing Lisa's True North story to life for all viewers

The storyboard takes the viewer on a tour of the Windy City and into the Inspiration Café, where Nigro serves the homeless in restaurant-style, with dignity, rather than the anonymous soup kitchen manner. According to one ad industry pundit, the scenes of Nigro and her customers interacting “were more moving than any hour of “Slumdog Millionaire.”
